My starter died after 9 days and it's my own fault

Left my sourdough starter on the counter during that heat wave in Dallas last week, came home to a grey film and a smell like old socks. I thought 85 degrees was fine, but apparently that plus a closed lid is a death sentence. Anyone else killed a starter in a heat spike or do I just need to name my next one something more resilient?
