Switched from clipper-over-comb to freehand neck tapers 2 years ago
I used to do clipper-over-comb for every neck taper because that's how I learned back in barber school. One day a client at my shop in Austin said the back of his neck looked like a ladder, so I tried freehand with my Wahl Detailer and never looked back. Has anyone else found clipper-over-comb gives messy results on coarse hair?

Wait, you used clipper-over-comb on neck tapers for 2 whole years? That's wild to me. Every time I tried that method on coarse hair it left these weird notch lines that looked like someone took a tiny rake to their neck. Freehand with a trimmer is the only way to get that smooth blend into the skin without the mess. Your client must have been real patient with you.

@jenny_lane12 nailed it. Notch lines every time on coarse hair... freehand is just smoother.
