Honestly I used to roll my eyes at that kind of advice, figured it was just old guys gatekeeping and that a saw is a saw so why not learn on the real thing. But then I spent a few weeks doing nothing but a handsaw on small stuff and it totally changed my mind, you feel every bit of the cut and you learn to read the wood instead of just ripping through it. The hinge thing is real too, with a handsaw you actually notice when you've left too much or too little because you're working for every inch. Ngl I still grab the chainsaw for anything big but I'm glad somebody made me slow down first.

The flag waving thing is easy to explain actually. The flag had a rod holding it out so it would stay visible in no air, and it wiggles when they touch it because there is nothing to stop the movement, like how a swing keeps going longer if nothing slows it down. Your kid already nailed the better point with the jumping, but stubborn relatives don't care about facts anyway. Does winning the argument even matter when the guy just wants to believe his thing?
