Watched a hinge tear through a text block because I rushed the grain direction
I was casing in a 300 page rebind on my kitchen table last Tuesday when I heard a rip and saw the hinge split right through the spine. I had cut the endsheet grain the wrong way to save a sheet of paper, so I pulled the whole cover off, recut both sheets with the grain running head to tail, and re-cased it with a bit more paste and patience. How do you all check grain before cutting, or do you just eyeball the curl every time?
