Just realized the parking garage by the Des Moines courthouse has a 9 minute grace period printed on the ticket but the gate gives you 15
Stood there with a stopwatch like a weirdo last Friday and sure enough, 15 minutes 4 seconds before the arm came down, which means that sign is either a lie or a suggestion, and now I want to know if anyone else has timed a grace period somewhere and found the posted number does not match the machine.

Timed the one at the downtown ramp last month and got 11 minutes when the sign says 8. My best guess is they pad it so the machine does not jam up with people fighting the gate. Either way I am not mad about a few free minutes. Just park, do your thing, and stop staring at the sign like it owes you money.
