I was digging through a dead subreddit from 2019 and found a user who said the inspection reports for the I-40 bridge near Memphis were being ignored because repair costs would blow the budget. They even named the exact contractor who flagged the cracks and got sidelined. Has anyone else gone back to check if those early warnings actually line up with what finally made the news?

The contractor they named, Gresham Smith, is the same firm that filed the whistleblower complaint about the I-40 bridge in 2021, and I just checked the dates. That forum post was up almost 18 months before the fracture was actually found. I remember reading that thread back then and thinking it was just another conspiracy take, but the timeline matches up way too clean. The part that really gets me is how they described the exact location of the crack, near the Tennessee side pier, and that's where the emergency closure happened. Someone out there had the full picture way ahead of the news, and nobody took them seriously because they wrote it in a dead subreddit.
