Update: I saved a 2016 screenshot of a Reddit post calling a tiny tax software startup a scam, and now it's worth $9 billion
I was cleaning out an old laptop last week and found a screenshot from 2016 of a Reddit thread where some guy was dunking on this little tax filing company, saying it was a scam and would never last. The top comment had 400 points calling the founder a clown. I kept it at the time just because I liked the drama, not because I thought anything would come of it. Fast forward to last month, that same company got valued at $9 billion, and I'm sitting here staring at my old screenshot feeling dumb for not buying in. Has anyone else kept old screenshots like this and actually made money off them later?
The "top comment had 400 points calling the founder a clown" part is what gets me. I read a piece in the Times a while back about how Reddit threads from years ago have basically become a graveyard of bad takes. There was this whole thing about a guy who saved posts mocking Tesla and Bitcoin, and now he just frames them for fun. The screenshots don't pay the bills, but they do show how wrong a crowd can be.
