TIL building a desk ain't as easy as the news says

Every article makes it sound like DIY projects save cash and are super simple. I figured I'd try making my own desk after reading all that hype. Honestly, it was a huge time sink and I kept running into little issues they never mention. My place is a mess now, and I'm not even sure it was worth it. Makes you wonder what else gets glossed over in those feel-good stories.

Look at it this way, every project has its rough spots. Yes, it's frustrating when guides leave stuff out, but you learn by doing. Calling it a huge waste feels like missing the point.

Sometimes the messy tries teach you more than a perfect guide ever could. I messed up my first coffee table three times before the legs stayed on. Now I just laugh when I see that wobbly thing in the corner.

Did you see that piece about how DIY guides never show the frustration? Ngl, my attempt at a bookshelf was just as messy.

Those guides skip the part where you spend an hour looking for a specific screw you just dropped. They make it seem like a straight line from buying wood to a finished piece. The real skill you learn isn't woodworking, it's problem-solving for all the stuff the instructions assume will just work out. My first desk has a permanent pencil mark because I measured wrong and had to change the whole plan. You end up with a desk and a whole new set of skills they never put in the headline.
