Can we talk about the Amelia Earhart museum in Atchison? I left feeling like everyone pretends she was a better pilot than she was
I stopped by the Amelia Earhart birthplace museum in Atchison, Kansas last month on a drive back from a job, and I walked out feeling like the whole thing was built to sell a legend more than a pilot. The displays keep talking about her courage and her spirit, but they go real light on the actual flying record. She washed out of a cross country flight early on, wrecked a plane on takeoff in Hawaii, and her last big attempt was a round the world trip she never finished. I am not saying she was not brave, but the way people talk about her you would think she was the best pilot of her time, and the museum did not show me much to back that up. There was one wall with maps and news clippings and a lot of quotes about following your dreams, and barely anything about the hours she logged or the planes she actually flew. For a $12 ticket I wanted more hard facts and fewer posters. Does anybody here know of a better source on her real flight record, or am I just being too harsh on a hometown hero?
