Caught myself praising a dead singer I barely listened to
I was at a friend's BBQ in Austin and this guy in a flannel starts going off about how Nirvana is only famous because he died young. I bit and said something about how Nevermind actually changed the sound of radio. He looked at me and said, 'Name three songs that are on the album after Nevermind.' I couldn't. That stuck with me because I realized I do the same thing with Bowie and Morrison too. I love the myth, not the actual catalog. Since then I've been listening to In Utero on my runs and honestly, half of it is a mess. How many of you have caught yourselves defending an artist you never really dove into past the hits?

Is getting caught on one trivia question really proof you dont love the music? Ive been a Beatles fan my whole life and I still couldnt name every deep cut if you put a gun to my head. The guy at the BBQ was being a gatekeeper, not a music expert. Also, In Utero isnt supposed to be clean or easy, its raw and messy on purpose. Loving the myth is part of it, but that doesnt mean the actual album doesnt hit you somewhere later on.
