The $60 audiobook that turned out to be a eulogy for a guy who never existed

I dropped 60 bucks on a biography about this jazz pianist everyone online swears was a genius, like the missing link between Monk and Herbie. Took me a week to finish it, and something felt off the whole time, like the dates never lined up with the cities he supposedly played. So I did a quick search one night, and turns out the whole thing was a hoax, a guy in Portland made up the musician and wrote the book as a prank that slowly took on a life of its own. I got so mad at myself, not for the money, but for all the fake emotion I put into a story about a ghost. Now I see the same people praising him in forums and I just want to warn folks before they waste a rainy weekend the way I did. Has anyone else fallen for one of these fake history rabbit holes, or am I the only one who buys books before checking the sources?
