DAE use a zip tie as a poor man's chain whip when you're stuck?

I was doing a cassette swap on a Saturday night in my garage in Boise and realized my chain whip was 20 miles away at the shop, so I looped a big zip tie around the cog and the handle of an old adjustable wrench. It held way better than I expected and got all 11 cogs off without slipping once, though I did snap two ties before I doubled them up. Has anyone else rigged a tool like this, or do you just keep a spare whip in your home box?
