My nephew asked why I still watch old sitcoms when everything is streaming now
My nephew stayed with me in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend and caught me on season 4 of an old sitcom I've seen probably 6 times. He asked why I bother when there's so much new stuff to watch, and I didn't have a good answer at first. Then it hit me that binging used to mean something different. Back in 2004 we had to wait a whole week for one episode and then a whole summer for the next season, so you'd tape them on VHS and rewatch until the tape wore out. Now everything drops at once and I still find myself going back to the same 5 or 6 shows instead of starting something new. He pulled up his phone and showed me his watchlist, 47 shows deep, and admitted he's finished maybe 3 of them. That number stuck with me. Maybe having too many choices makes it harder to actually finish anything. Does anyone else rewatch old comfort shows instead of starting the new stuff piling up in their queue?
47 shows? That is wild. Having that many things waiting for you would just make me freeze up and watch nothing at all. I bet half of those never even get opened once.
