Everyone says quench in warm oil, but my 1084 blade warped twice until I tried something else
I keep hearing new smiths get told to quench in warm oil, and I think that advice cost me two blades last month. I was in my garage in Boise working on a 1084 hunter, maybe 7 inches of edge, and I had my quench tank sitting at about 130 degrees like everyone says. First blade came out with a curve to the left that I could see with my bare eyes. Second attempt, same thing, and I was out about $40 in steel plus a full evening of work. What actually fixed it was going cooler, around 100 degrees, and moving the blade in a straight line instead of edge leading. The third one came out flat. I think the warm oil gets repeated so much that nobody questions whether it fits their steel or their tank size. Has anyone else had warping get better after dropping their quench temp?
