Hammer finish came out splotchy after my new anvil arrived
Picked up a used anvil from a farm sale outside Dayton last month, real nice face on it. Tried to do a simple leaf taper and the hammer marks left these weird dark patches, never saw that on my old beat-up anvil. Turns out the face had some leftover oil that burned in, so I spent an hour scrubbing it with a wire brush and mild acid. Anybody else deal with a new-to-them anvil that needed a full surface prep before it acted right?

Did you try a scotch brite pad and some kerosene first? I had the same thing with an old anvil from an auction, spent a whole weekend cleaning gunk off the face before it would take a clean hit.
