Rant: a farrier at the county fair told me my anvil was "too quiet" and it got under my skin
I spent 20 years thinking a dull ring meant good steel, but he said a dead anvil just means you are fighting it with every strike instead of letting it work with you. Any of you ever set a stubborn anvil on a wooden stump or strap it down, and did it change how your hammer lands?

Quiet tools usually mean something is off, like a loose hammer handle or a bad guitar string.
