Spent 9 hours forge welding a billet last Tuesday and it delaminated on the last pass, worst day at the anvil I've had

Nine hours just means you were due for a bad one, that's not the same as a wasted day. I've had billets blow up on the last hit too and honestly those failures teach you more about heat and timing than the ones that come out clean. Get back under the hammer and try again, that's all it is.
