DAE remember when a radio guy in Des Moines swore a cough button would save me
Back in 2016 I did a live news hit from a county fair in Iowa and my throat was wrecked from allergies. The engineer there, a guy named Dale, told me to just hit the cough button and keep reading the script. I figured he was messing with me, but I tried it on air and the whole coughing fit vanished from the feed. Problem was my mouth kept moving and viewers saw me hacking with zero sound, which looked way worse than if I had just coughed. Has anyone else had a fix like that backfire because the audience still sees the visual?
Ha, hate to break it to you but Dale wasn't really fixing anything, that button just mutes the mic so the feed goes quiet while your face is still doing the cough. The visual part is exactly why it looks so bad, since nobody at home can hear it but everyone can see you turning red.
