Drove 45 minutes to game night and the host had all 6 players watching a rulebook video
So this was this past Friday. I got off work at 5, grabbed my copy of Wingspan just in case, and drove from my place in Round Rock up to a buddy's house in Pflugerville. 45 minutes with traffic for what should've been 25.
I walk in and there's 6 of us standing around the table. Nobody has a game out. The host, Dave, has his laptop hooked to the TV and says we're going to watch a 22 minute teach video for a game none of us own instead of just reading the rules for 5 minutes. I'm standing there holding my bag like an idiot.
We got maybe 3 rounds into the actual game by 9:30. Total play time on a game that says 60 to 90 minutes. I left before the last turn.
Anyway, is there a polite way to tell a host you'd rather just learn from the book at the table? Or do I just start hosting at my own place?
Had this exact thing happen with my brother in law and I just started bringing a game I already know how to teach, then pulling it out while the video loads. Now I say something like "hey I got this one ready to go if you want to save the video for later" and most hosts take the hint. If Dave still goes full movie night on you, host at your place and don't feel bad about it.
