Had to choose between my old Victorinox and a new $200 knife roll setup

Been using the same beat up Victorinox Fibrox for about 6 years now. The handle is loose and the tip broke off last month when I dropped it on concrete. I kept telling myself to just buy another one for $40 and be done with it. But my buddy at the local shop kept pushing me to try a proper Japanese gyuto with a saya and everything. I finally gave in last week and spent $180 on a Tojiro from a place in Chicago. First day using it on a big job at a power plant, it felt WAY too delicate for the kind of abuse we put knives through. I was scared to even scrape gaskets with it. Ended up grabbing my old Victorinox from the truck after lunch. So now I have a nice knife for home and I'm back to the trusty beater at work. Anyone else shell out for fancy gear only to realize the cheap stuff just works better on site?

Yeah but doesnt spending that much on a knife you barely use kinda defeat the purpose? @josephbailey nailed it - why drop cash on something thats too nice for the work you actually do. I get that a fancy blade feels good in hand for a minute but when youre scraping gaskets or cutting through zip ties on a pipe flange you dont want to baby it. The Victorinox is dull as a butter knife after a week but it takes a beating and youre not crying over a chipped edge. My old boss used to say a tool is only as good as how much you actually use it.

Fair point but sometimes nice tools just feel right in your hand.

Why buy the farm when a solid beater gets the job done?
