TIL the hard way about preheating thick plate

Ran a job last week on 1.5 inch plate outside of Gary, Indiana and skipped the preheat because the air temp read 60. Cracked right down the weld seam after it cooled overnight, cost us a full day of rework. Old foreman showed me the math on how ambient temp plus plate mass pulls heat out way faster than you think, and we used a rosebud torch to hold 200 degrees for the redo. Anyone else had a cold pass bite them when the weather looked fine?
