Tube rolling versus hand rolling a 2 inch boiler tube, which one actually holds up?
Last month on a job in Gary, Indiana, I watched a guy roll a whole bank of 2 inch tubes by hand with a knocker while the other crew used a torque controlled tube roller on the same unit. The hand rolled ones passed hydro fine, but the roller crew finished a full shift earlier and their joints came out dead even on the expander check, so I am starting to wonder if hand rolling is just tradition at this point. What do you all run on smaller tube work, and has anyone seen a hand rolled joint fail where a rolled one would not have?
