My book club read the wrong novel for 2 months because of a spine label
Our group of 8 started what we thought was The Underground Railroad but I kept saying the pacing felt off. Turns out the library copy we all grabbed had a misprinted spine label for Colson Whitehead's other book, Zone One. Nobody checked the cover because we all just pulled the same shelf copy on reserve. I caught it when someone quoted a line about zombies that definitely wasnt in the historical fiction plot. Now I make everyone do a first-chapter check before we commit. Has anyone else had a similar mixup where the wrong book derailed your whole meeting schedule?
Actually, Zone One is about a zombie outbreak, so someone quoting a zombie line would definitely make that obvious. But your library probably had it mishelved too since they printed the wrong spine label. That's on them, not really on your group.
