My sister's hot take on unreliable narrators wrecked my book club pick

Last Tuesday my sister said she refuses to finish any book where the narrator lies to her, called it lazy writing. I argued that unreliable narrators like in Gone Girl or The Secret History are what make the story stick with you for days. She shot back that it's just authors hiding plot holes behind a fog of confusion. Now I'm trying to pick next month's read and I'm second guessing everything. Are unreliable narrators a clever tool or just a crutch, and do you filter them out before suggesting a book to your group?
