Our book club spent 3 weeks stuck on one chapter, the vote split was brutal

We picked a literary fiction pick for July, and the discussion about chapter 4 just would not end. I figured we'd wrap it up in one night, but the symbolism argument went on for three separate meetings, that's 6 hours total. The split was 4 people saying it was about grief, 3 saying it was about control, and 2 of us just wanted to move on. Has anyone else had a single chapter derail their whole monthly schedule like that?

Oh man, that brings me right back to our book club and "The Goldfinch" last spring. We spent two whole meetings on the part where the painting gets stolen, arguing if the real point was about luck or about the main kid making his own bad choices. The vote was 5 to 4 to 3 and honestly nobody budged. What finally broke the cycle was picking one person to be the "devil's advocate" for the opposite side each meeting, so we weren't all just digging into our own corners. We also set a hard rule that if a chapter takes more than an hour, we table it and everyone writes their hot take on a sticky note for later. It saved our sanity and we actually finished the book with a week to spare.

...and here I thought the worst debate we'd have all year was whether the main character was actually a ghost or just having a bad dream. Six hours on one chapter sounds less like book club and more like a hostage negotiation. My advice? Next meeting, just bring a timer and a hat with everyone's names in it. Whoever gets pulled gets to make the final call, and the rest of you can finally get to chapter 5 before the library wants the book back.
