Our club kept falling apart on meeting night until we made one rule about picking the next book
For about two years our group of 7 would spend the first 45 minutes just arguing over what to read next, and half the time we ran out of time and never talked about the actual book. Last spring I tried something out of pure frustration: whoever hosts the meeting gets to pick the next book, no group vote at all, as long as it's under 400 pages. We've run it this way for 8 months now and we actually finish our discussions, plus people show up prepared because nobody wants to be the host who picks a dud. It's way less democratic than our old system, but honestly the meetings are better. Has any other club handed the pick to one person, and did it stick or did people start skipping the months they didn't like?
