That book club meeting where a member brought a 40 page conspiracy theory handout

Three months ago at our monthly meeting, a guy named Mark showed up with a stapled packet about how the author secretly encoded a prediction about the 2024 election in the chapter numbers. He passed copies around and expected us to discuss it for the full two hours. I asked him a simple question about what page he based his math on and he couldn't give me a straight answer. Has anyone else had a member go completely off the rails with their own interpretation?

Oh man, I've been there! In my case it was a woman who was convinced the author was actually writing about her own life and she'd bring color coded timelines to prove it. What finally worked for me was pulling her aside after the meeting and just being real with her. I said something like "Hey, I can see you put a ton of work into this, but it's kind of overwhelming for the rest of us to follow. Could we maybe focus on one or two points you want to share next time?" That actually helped because she felt heard but also got a gentle boundary. Your mileage may vary depending on the person, but sometimes a one on one chat beats trying to redirect the whole group. It's tricky because you don't want to squash someone's enthusiasm, but the group reading experience gets lost when one person takes over with their own theory.

Oh man, color coded timelines! That's a whole new level of dedication (or obsession, depending on your view). I had a similar thing in my group with a guy who would print out like 30 pages of his own notes and hand them around. What finally worked for me was just talking to him before the next meeting and saying something like "I love how into this you are but maybe we could try having everyone share just one thing they noticed about the book first so it feels more like a group discussion?" He actually took it really well and started saving his big theories for after the official meeting was over, which worked out great since those of us who wanted to could stick around. It's all about that one on one conversation where you're honest but you make sure they know you're not trying to shut them down completely.

Wow, better than the guy who showed up with a full PowerPoint presentation and a laser pointer! Did he at least bring snacks to soften the blow of that 40 page manifesto?
