I thought that Japanese screw punch was all hype until I tried one on a rebind
For a good while I figured those fancy Japanese screw punches were just something folks on the forums liked to show off, and my trusty awl was fine for poking holes. Then I did a rebind on a 1930s dictionary for a guy in Portland and the paper was so brittle that my awl split a signature right down the fold. I got mad and ordered a cheap screw punch off a woodworking site, 15 bucks or so, mostly to prove it wouldn't help. First time I used it I set it to the right size and it punched clean through 6 sheets with no tearing, and the holes lined up so well my sewing went twice as fast. I've since used it on everything from pamphlets to a big cloth-bound journal and it has not let me down. Maybe it's just me but I wish I'd stopped being a holdout sooner. What tool did you all write off before it won you over?
