Question about those 'grow lights are a scam' people

My basil was dying in my Seattle apartment, so I bought a $40 panel light as a last try. It's been 3 weeks and I have more leaves than I can use now. Anyone else have a plant totally saved by something they doubted?

Those scam claims always seemed weird to me. My place faces a brick wall, so even a sunny day does nothing. Got a basic light for some herbs last year and they went nuts. Hannah_wells is right about Seattle light, but sometimes you need to fake a whole different climate. That little panel turned my sad mint into a jungle.
