Tried to repot my snake plant and ended up flinging soil all over my roommate's white couch

I was in my tiny apartment kitchen last Sunday trying to gently shake the old dirt off the roots and somehow launched a handful of potting mix straight onto the cushion, and now I'm begging my roommate not to notice the faint brown stain before I figure out how to spot clean it without making it worse; has anyone else had a plant project completely backfire on furniture?
