PSA: My $30 heated blanket from Target died on night 3 and I was in the ER at 2am in Denver
The cord got crazy hot right where it bends near the plug and I smelled burning plastic while half asleep. A nurse in Denver told me they see a few of these every winter and that I should check the plug after every use. Has anyone else had a heated blanket or throw go bad fast, or did I just get a bad one?
The real problem is that cord bending right at the plug base. That spot takes all the stress every time you yank the blanket or roll over, and the wires inside get weak over time. Once they fray, the current has nowhere good to go, so the cord heats up and melts. Cheap blankets skip the strain relief piece that keeps the cord from bending sharp there, so you get a fire risk after just a few nights. Check the plug end of any blanket you own right now by feeling for warm spots or stiff cracked spots. If it is warm when it should not be, toss it, a new blanket is way cheaper than an ER bill.
