That $12 extension cord from the gas station in Reno taught me a lesson
Needed one for a quick job out of town, cheap was the play. The plastic shell cracked when I unplugged it the second time, wire almost pulled clean out. I kept it anyway and wrapped it in tape, stupid move. 3 weeks later I smelled burning plastic in my garage, that cord was hot to the touch. Tossed it in the trash after that. Has anyone else had a sketchy cord give you that gut feeling you should've listened to sooner?

Kept a cheap cord for way longer than I should have too, but honestly a hot cord in a garage isn't always the cord's fault. You got a fridge or freezer running on that same outlet? Old wiring plus any load can make stuff heat up, not just the cord. The tape job was your real problem though, that's just asking for trouble.
