The 15 second sourdough 'hack' I mocked for months actually worked on my starter
I spent 6 weeks babying a sourdough starter in my Milwaukee kitchen, feeding it twice a day, keeping it at 78 degrees, the whole ritual. Then my sister sends me this 15 second video where some guy just dumps pineapple juice in and says 'trust me, this kills the bad bacteria fast.' I laughed so hard I almost choked, called it pseudo-science trash in our group chat. But after my third failed loaf came out like a hockey puck last Tuesday, I figured I had nothing to lose. I added two tablespoons of canned pineapple juice to my discard jar, left it on the counter overnight, and that thing doubled by morning with a smell like fresh yogurt instead of nail polish remover. Now I'm wondering how many other dumb short video tricks are actually backed by real chemistry but just look stupid on camera. Has anyone else tried a 'hack' they were dead sure was fake and it genuinely fixed a problem, or did I just get lucky with the juice and my starter was already close? Give me your worst mocking-to-miraculous stories so I know if I should start trusting these clips more.

Pineapple juice actually has a real reason behind it, the acid lowers the pH so the bad bugs can't grow while the yeast you want can. But here's where I'd push back, that trick is a fix for one problem, not proof that every 15 second clip is hiding real science, most of them are still junk. Your starter probably was closer than you thought and the juice just gave it a nudge, so don't go dumping random stuff in your dough just because some guy on your phone said trust me.
