Chose a 4 foot level over a string line for a porch in Boise, and my corner posts are dead on
Last month I had a small porch job in Boise, just 12 feet by 8 feet, and I was getting ready to set the corner posts. Normally I run a string line for that kind of thing, it's what my old foreman taught me and it's always worked fine. But my string kept catching the wind that day and I was getting annoyed, so I grabbed my 4 foot level and just checked each post against the last one instead. I figured worst case I'd pull them and redo it. When I got the frame up and laid my straightedge across the tops, every post was within an eighth of an inch. I could not believe it. I've been setting posts off string lines for 15 years and never once had them come out that tight. Now I'm wondering if I've been making extra work for myself this whole time. Has anyone else switched off string lines for short runs like this, or did I just get lucky with a good batch of posts?
