Talked to a 30 year mason at lunch, now I doubt my mortar mix
He said he quit using the bagged stuff and goes back to lime putty with sand and cement at 1:2:9 for repointing, claims it flexes with the old brick instead of fighting it. We were on a job downtown and he pointed at a 1920s wall that was cracking where a newer repair had been done, asked me if I ever checked the hardness of the brick before I mixed anything. Has anyone here actually tried that old school recipe, or am I just going to waste a Saturday mixing chalk?
