TIL the dented produce cart at my Kroger in Tulsa sells 5 lb bags of carrots for $1.50
I was at my local Kroger in Tulsa last Tuesday when I noticed a cart near the back with a hand-written sign that said "ugly but good." A worker named Dee told me they bag up carrots, peppers, and apples that are too banged up for the regular shelf and sell them for $1.50 to $2 a bag, so I grabbed a 5 lb bag of carrots and made soup, roasted veggies, and carrot muffins all week. Does anyone else have a store that does this, and what do you make with a huge bag of one veggie before it goes bad?
Dang, a dollar fifty for five pounds of carrots? That's like robbery but in reverse, Kroger is basically paying you to eat soup at that point. My store just throws the ugly stuff in the dumpster out back like it's radioactive or something, which feels like a crime when eggs cost what they cost now. For a giant bag like that I'd do carrot cake muffins, freeze half the shredded stuff, and roast the rest with whatever sad onions are dying in my fridge. Just don't be like me and forget the bag in the bottom drawer for three weeks, because trust me, carrots turn into bendy orange noodles real fast.
