Unpopular opinion: I stopped buying chicken breasts and switched to leg quarters, my grocery bill dropped by $40 a month
I always grabbed the $5.99/lb boneless skinless stuff out of habit until a guy at the Kroger meat counter pointed out leg quarters were 89 cents a pound that week. Made a big batch in the oven with lemon and garlic and honestly my kids couldn't tell the difference in tacos and soups. Anyone else made the switch, or do you just deal with the extra prep time for white meat?
The "couldn't tell the difference" part is doing a lot of work here. Leg quarters have dark meat, more fat, more skin, and a totally different texture. That works fine in tacos and soups where everything is chopped up and covered in sauce, but I've tried it for anything where the chicken is the star and yeah, people notice. Nobody in my house was fooled by a leg quarter on a plate next to rice. So the switch makes sense if most of what you cook is shredded or diced into stuff, but calling it the same as breast meat just isn't true. And $40 a month sounds like a lot until you figure the meat counter guy was selling you a sale price, those aren't 89 cents every week.
