Why does everyone think canned beans are always cheaper than dried?

I keep seeing people say grab canned beans because they are more budget friendly. But I did the math last month on a bag of dried pinto beans from Aldi. That $1.49 bag made about 6 cans worth when cooked. Cans are $0.89 each on sale here, so that is over $5 for the same amount. Dried beans take planning to soak but they freeze great after cooking. Am I missing something on how people figure their costs?

angela_hart "not everyone remembers to soak beans" reminds me of my neighbor who once tried to save time by not soaking black beans and they turned into little rocks (she still ate them, just chewed real slow).

Fair point but the time and convenience matters too. Not everyone remembers to soak beans the night before or wants to deal with a pot simmering for two hours after work. Plus canned beans are ready to throw into anything in 30 seconds, which is worth something when you're exhausted and hungry.
