A guy running a $12-a-night hostel in Hanoi asked why I book flights 6 months early, and it cut my whole trip cost by $310
He said the cheap seats drop 3 to 4 weeks out when nobody's buying, so now I just watch prices and pounce late, has anyone else tried booking closer to the date instead of locking everything in early?

It's the same trick as buying stuff off season, like how winter coats go on sale in March when nobody wants them. Everyone panics and books early because that's what we've always been told, but the airlines know that and price it in. I've been doing the wait and watch thing for a couple years now and it works most of the time, though you do get burned once in a while when a route is popular. The trick is having a backup plan so you're not stuck paying $800 because you gambled wrong.
