That $38 "hostel" in Rome was secretly a bunk in someone's kitchen

I booked this place on Hostelworld that only had 4 reviews but all said 'family vibe'. Show up at 11pm and the owner leads me past his actual family eating pasta, opens a closet door, and there's a mattress on top of a washing machine. The ad said 'cozy private room' but it was literally a storage space he rented out for cash. I paid $38 and he still wanted extra for using the bathroom. Has anyone else gotten tricked by those super cheap listings that turn out to be somebody's actual apartment? How do you spot them before you book?
