Appreciation post: my envelope of cash vs. my debit card, and the envelope won by a mile
Back in 2019 I was swiping my card for everything and wondering where my money went by the 15th of each month. Then my roommate in Baltimore got me to try the cash envelope system for groceries and gas, and I actually stuck to $340 a month for food instead of the $500 I was blowing before. Seeing the bills get thin in that envelope hits way different than a number on a screen, and I stopped doing little impulse buys at the register. Anyone else go back to cash for certain categories, or do you just set alerts on your banking app?
Hold on, you went from $500 to $340 a month just by switching to envelopes? That is a $160 difference every single month, which is almost two grand a year. I am sitting here doing the math on that and it is blowing my mind a little bit. The part that gets me is that it was the same money either way, just paper instead of a card, and somehow your brain treated it totally different. The thinning envelope thing must be real, because that number on my banking app never stops me from grabbing one more thing at checkout.
