Warning: my old paper budget book from 2011 beats my spreadsheet app in one way
Cleaning out a closet in my apartment last Saturday, I found the little spiral notebook I used for money back in 2011, and flipping through it hit me weird. Back then I wrote every purchase by hand, even a $2.50 coffee, and I had to sit there and do the math myself to know if rent was covered. I counted it up and there were 14 months of pages in there with maybe 3 mistakes total, and I think the slow writing is the whole reason it worked. My phone app now is faster but I swipe and forget, so the notebook actually kept me more honest. Anyone here still write it out on paper, or did you find an app that makes you slow down?
That line about sitting there doing the math yourself really hits, I read somewhere that writing stuff down by hand makes your brain actually process it instead of just swiping past. My bank app shows me the numbers but I never really look at them, so you might be onto something.
