Appreciation post: the guy at the Tucson art store who told me to stop buying expensive dot grid notebooks
I was dropping $28 every 6 weeks on fancy journals because I thought plain paper would mess up my layouts. He handed me a $4 pack of graph paper and said most of his regulars just print their own dot grids and glue them in, which sounds like a pain but saved me around $200 this year alone. Has anyone else switched to loose sheets and actually stuck with it, or did you go back to bound notebooks?

My wife bought me one of those $30 Leuchtturm notebooks for my birthday two years ago and I felt guilty using it because every messed up page felt like burning money. I switched to a $6 pack of 500 loose sheets and a $3 clipboard from Walmart, and I have not looked back since. The trick for me was punching holes and keeping everything in a cheap three ring binder so pages do not go flying. Printing dot grids at the library costs me about 15 cents a page, which beats the fancy stuff by a mile. I will say the loose sheets feel less special, so I keep one nice bound book for stuff I want to hand down to my kids someday. Everything else, notes, lists, sketches, goes on the cheap paper and I do not stress about it.
