My habit tracker was lying to me for 6 months

I kept a little box in my bullet journal for drinking water and I checked it off every single day. Then last Tuesday I actually counted my bottles and realized I was barely hitting 3 glasses when I thought I was doing 8. The tipping point was when I felt dizzy at work and my coworker pointed out my water bottle was still full at 2pm. I had been filling in the box at night out of habit, not actually tracking what I did. Now I write the number of glasses in the box instead of just a checkmark, and it totally changed my whole spread. Anyone else ever fake their own tracker on accident?

The same thing happened to me with my reading goal. I was marking down that I read every night before bed, but really I was just picking up my book for five minutes and then falling asleep. The checkmark felt good at the moment but it didn't match reality. What finally worked was switching to writing down the page number I stopped on. That forced me to be honest because you cant fake a specific number like that. After a week I saw I was only doing about ten pages a night, which was way less than I assumed. It stung a little but at least the tracker became a real tool instead of a notebook full of lies.
