My aunt's $500 'legal insurance' plan actually paid out when her bakery got sued over a yelp review
My aunt runs a small bakery in Portland and signed up for a $500 legal insurance plan 2 years ago that I told her was a waste of money, mostly because I figured it was one of those things that never actually covers anything real. Last month a customer sued her over a yelp review response, and the plan covered her full lawyer fees plus a $2,000 settlement, no deductible, and she just had to send in 3 forms. Has anyone else here actually used a prepaid legal plan for a small business, or did we just get lucky with this one?
Covered her full lawyer fees plus a $2,000 settlement" is the part where I check if your aunt is secretly a wizard, because that is not how insurance usually works in my experience. Legal plans are basically gym memberships for lawsuits: you pay every month and then find out the treadmill is broken when you actually need it. Sounds like she picked the one plan that read the fine print for her, which is either great luck or you should go buy a lottery ticket together.
