My CPA told me to quit putting my handshake deals on napkins and get them in writing, and I finally listened
Two guys on my crew got into it over who was owed what on a side job, and since nothing was written down it turned into a $2,300 mess that almost cost me both of them. My CPA just shrugged and said a one page contract costs less than one day of fighting. Anyone got a plain english template they actually use for small jobs?
Funny how the CPA made it sound like a one pager is some magic fix. In my experience the paper just gives two guys something new to argue about, since half the time they never spell out the split, who buys materials, or what happens when the job runs long. I have watched crews fight harder over a badly written contract than they ever did over a napkin. Maybe the real problem is you put two guys on one side job and left them to sort out the money, which is on you more than it is on the napkin.
