Oh man, this brings back something I watched happen to a buddy of mine... he kept the same maintenance contract for his HVAC units for almost a decade because it was "what he always did." Then one summer his compressor dies, and the fine print says they only cover parts under 5 years old. He paid $1,400 out of pocket while still paying that monthly fee the whole time. He was so mad he read the whole thing line by line that night and found like three other weird clauses he never noticed before.
