Can we talk about the $3 clearance grill brush that scratched my whole grate

I grabbed a wire brush from the dollar bin at a hardware store in Boise last month thinking a brush is a brush. Two cooks later I noticed deep scratches across the grates and little wire bits stuck in the grime. Turns out the bristles were stiffer than the grate coating, so I traded a $3 save for a $40 replacement set. Do you all check brush stiffness before buying, or just grab whatever is cheap?
