Hot take: I thought ultrasonic cleaning brass gears was overkill until I saw the sludge come off a 1958 Leica
A guy named Ray at a repair meetup in Cleveland kept telling me to stop scrubbing gears with a toothbrush and Q-tips. I figured a brush was fine for 12 years of shutter work, so I ignored him. Then he dropped a grimy rangefinder gear in his ultrasonic tank for 6 minutes and the fluid turned into brown soup. I bought the same $120 unit the next week and it pulled 60 years of gunk out of a lens helical I had already cleaned twice. Now I'm wondering what else I've been doing the hard way, does anyone here still hand scrub on purpose?
