Almost ruined a Leica M3" - but didn't, so the cleaner did its job. You spent $180 to learn that cheap gear has limits, not exactly a surprise. Next time maybe spend that money on a book about how camera stores actually clean things, probably save you the stress and the cash.

Next time maybe spend that money on a book about how camera stores actually clean things" - honestly that's kinda funny but also true. I once dropped like $50 on a "pro" cleaning cloth kit and it just left streaks everywhere. Ended up using an old tshirt and some lens wipes from the drugstore and it worked way better. Sometimes the cheap stuff is just a waste of money in a different way.

My dad had a similar thing with his old turntable. He bought one of those fancy vacuum record cleaning machines and it left a weird residue all over his rare Beatles records. @smith.elliot is probably right that a book would have saved the day, but now he just uses a paintbrush and some distilled water and they sound fine. Sometimes the simplest stuff works better than the expensive gadgets.
